When is Salivary Gland surgery needed?
Salivary gland surgery is usually recommended when a gland becomes blocked, swollen or repeatedly infected and does not settle with simpler treatment.
Signs to look for:
- Swelling under the jaw, chin or in front of the ear
- Pain that worsens around mealtimes
- Repeated infections in the same area
- A persistent lump near a salivary gland
- A bad taste or discharge in the mouth
After surgery, aftercare may include keeping the wound clean, managing swelling, following dietary advice and taking prescribed medication while the area heals.
If any of these sound familiar, an assessment can identify the cause and determine whether surgery is the right treatment.
