Frequently asked questions.

How long do blepharoplasty results last?

Blepharoplasty results are typically long-lasting.

Upper eyelids: Improvements often last 5–10 years or more, depending on skin quality, ageing, and genetics.
Lower eyelids: Results tend to be even longer, commonly 10–15 years, with many people never needing further treatment.

What is a good age for blepharoplasty?

Most people seeking blepharoplasty are between 30 and 60, when age‑related changes become more noticeable.

Those with a family tendency toward droopy lids may benefit earlier.
Healthy individuals in their 70s and beyond can still be suitable candidates, depending on overall health and an eye assessment.

Is blepharoplasty painful?

Blepharoplasty is generally well tolerated.
Upper eyelid surgery often feels similar to a minor skin procedure, with mild discomfort afterwards.
Lower eyelid surgery is also not usually very painful, though it tends to cause more swelling and bruising than upper eyelid surgery.
Most people manage with minimal pain relief and experience temporary tightness, swelling, or soreness.

Is blepharoplasty a high‑risk surgery?

Blepharoplasty is considered safe when performed by an experienced specialist. Common temporary effects include bruising, swelling, dry eyes, and mild discomfort. Serious complications are uncommon, but any sudden change in vision requires urgent medical attention.

How long does the blepharoplasty procedure take?

Upper eyelids: Around 1 hour, usually with local anaesthesia.
Lower eyelids: Typically 1–2 hours. This can be done with local anaesthetic
IV sedation or general anaesthesia may also be used, depending on the approach and patient preference.

Will I have visible scarring?

Blepharoplasty incisions are placed in very discreet locations, so scars are usually difficult to notice once healed.

Upper eyelid surgery: The incision sits within the natural eyelid crease, which helps hide the scar when the eyes are open.
Lower eyelid surgery: The incision may be placed just below the lash line or inside the eyelid, depending on the technique used.
As healing progresses, scars typically fade and become barely visible. Your surgeon will also provide guidance on scar care to support optimal healing.

Disclaimer: Scarring varies from person to person. There are certain Individuals with a history of excessive scarring. Scars may be visible or non-visible. This will be discussed with your clinician, Mr Anabtawi, during your consultation.

Can I drive home after the procedure?

You will not be able to drive yourself home after blepharoplasty. Even when the procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, your vision may be temporarily blurred due to ointment, swelling, or protective dressings. If sedation or a general anaesthetic is used, driving is not permitted for at least 24 hours.
